iStretch 16 take 2

Who: Radagast and SO
Exercise type: iStretch 16 (a downloaded, mp3-based yoga workout)
Portions of mp3: Entire 45-minute workout
Duration: ~50 minutes
Notes: This was an audio-only workout from iTrain; it did include a supplemental PDF with pictures and descriptions of most of the poses (at least upward-facing dog was missing). The audio instructions were decent, but assumed that the exerciser knew how to get into most of the poses, making us pause the workout a few times so we could use the PDF to figure out what we were supposed to do.

Calf stretching take 1

Who: Radagast's SO
Exercise type: Calf stretches
Notes: Radagast's SO has determined that it should be medically useful to do daily calf stretches; this post will help track those stretches. To encourage Radagast's SO to do these stretches, we have decided that stretching 7/7 days in a week will earn $5 toward the Radagast's SO exercise reward fund, and stretching at least 5/7 days in a week will earn $2.50.

Week of 4/15: 7/7 (4/15, 4/16, 4/17, 4/18, 4/19, 4/20, 4/21)

Radagast's totals: 55/225; 4/75; $455.00

iSculpt Traditional 12 take 1

Who: Radagast and SO
Exercise type: iSculpt Traditional Circuit 12 (a downloaded, mp3-based circuit workout)
Portions of mp3: First 20-minute segment, second 20-minute segment, cooldown
Duration: ~80 minutes
Notes: This was a circuit workout that alternated periods of high-intensity muscle-exhausting work with short rest breaks. This is the most cardiovascularly intense workout that we've done; it reminded both of us of traditional calisthenics (as seen in many high-school and college PE classes).

This was an audio-only workout from iTrain. Radagast found the audio prompting to be mediocre: the instructions on how to do some of the moves were vague, the coach's constant barking ("come on!" "that's it, that's all you have left" "you can do this" "remember to breathe" "keep it up" "keep going") was annoying, and the rest periods were not nearly as long as specified (requiring us to run over to the computer to pause). The supplemental PDF file left out one move (the chair dip, or something like that).

Radagast absolutely despised this workout, largely because this type of high intensity workout alternating with periods of rest makes him nauseated (which is why he absolutely hated his college PE class, which consisted solely of jogging for extended periods, after which he always felt like throwing up). As a result of feeling nauseated, Radagast stopped doing this workout after about 15 minutes, though he did do the stretch portion at the end. This workout also reminded Radagast of high school gym class, which is not a good thing to remind him of.

Radagast's SO completed the workout, and reports that it seems like a tough but good workout. Radagast's SO also believes that the prompting was not overly vague when combined with the PDF.

Soreness report: Radagast's SO's calves and butt are already sore.

Radagast's totals: 55/225; 4/75; $455.00
Radagast's SO's totals: 54/225; 6/75; -$2.50

Timesaver Cardio Fat Burner take 1

Who: Radagast's SO
Exercise type: Kathy Smith's Timesaver Cardio Fat Burner
Portions of tape: Aerobics segment 1, aerobics segment 2, stretch (entire tape)
Duration: ~60 minutes
Notes: This tape has two 20-minute aerobic sections that are independent of each other, followed by a stretch at the end. Radagast's SO had trouble following along with the moves, primarily because the moves were only demonstrated once or twice before being worked into a more complicated, faster routine (but also possibly due to Radagast's SO being not overly coordinated). The first segment seemed both harder to follow and more intense than the second segment, though the second segment also had alternate moves included to make the workout higher-impact (Radagast's SO stuck with the low-impact moves).

Radagast didn't do the tape (as he was weeding), but he did hear all the whoops and yells from the background exercisers on the tape.

iStretch 8 take 1

Who: Radagast and SO
Exercise type: iStretch 8 - Athletic stretch (a downloaded, mp3-based stretching workout)
Portions of mp3: Entire 20-minute workout
Duration: ~20 minutes
Notes: This was a hips- and legs-focused stretching workout that also included a few good balancing exercises/stretches. This required a bit more muscular work than Pure and Simple Stretch, but wasn't nearly as comprehensive of a stretch workout (it was also half the length).

This was an audio-only workout from iTrain; the audio prompting was easy to follow. The workout also included a supplemental PDF with pictures and descriptions of the poses. Unlike iStretch 6, this PDF was comprehensive (including good text descriptions of each stretch), though because the audio commentary was so good we only referred back to the PDF once during the entire workout. We both liked the background music.

Abs Yoga take 1

Who: Radagast and SO
Exercise type: Abs Yoga for Beginners with Rodney Yee
Portions of tape: conscious breathing warmup, abs workout, deep relaxation (entire tape)
Duration: ~20 minutes
Notes: While the breathing warmup did little but get us both laughing1, it's thankfully short and led into an excellent 13-minute abs workout. We haven't done so much leg lifting, boat-posing, and head/shoulder lifting in a long time, and both of us had to give up on a couple of poses due to tired abs. We'll have to work towards being able to hold the poses for the length that Rodney does.

Even though this video does get our abs working, due to the shortness of the workout it will only qualify for $2.50 in reward funds, and doesn't count as an intense exercise bout.

Radagast's totals: 43/225; 3/75; $417.50
Radagast's SO's totals: 45/225; 3/75; -$32.50

iStretch 6 take 1

Who: Radagast and SO
Exercise type: iStretch 6 (a downloaded, mp3-based yoga workout)
Portions of mp3: Entire 60-minute workout
Duration: ~80 minutes
Notes: A very active yoga workout, this quickly built up to fast switches between various poses, and also included many challenging balance poses (e.g., twisted half moon). This got our heart rates way up and our muscles working hard; we both collapsed due to being exhausted a couple of times during the workout. However, thanks to Radagast's SO's encouragement (and a somewhat less strenuous final 20 minutes) we made it through the entire thing.

This was an audio-only workout from iTrain; it did include a supplemental PDF with pictures and descriptions of some of the poses and sequences, but some poses were left out, and many of the sequences were left out. The audio instructions were decent, but we did have to stop the workout multiple times and go back to try to figure out what we were supposed to do. In fact, there are still some poses that we aren't sure we did correctly, as they weren't included in the PDF and weren't described well. We both liked the background music.
